Some issues can be resolved after just a few sessions other issues can sometimes be more complicated and deeply entrenched. Whilst our psychologists will attempt to help you overcome your issues as quickly as possible, they also do not believe in “band-aid therapy” or unsustainable quick fixes. We know that sometimes effectively overcoming a long-standing issue can take a lot more time but your psychologist will always discuss this with you based on your needs. Sessions with a psychologist run for an hour. Sometimes however, your psychologist may suggest that an extra 30 minutes or a double counselling session would be useful in certain circumstances. Taking your general information could take a while and doesn’t count in session time.
  • Will my sessions be recorded? What about privacy?
Yes, counselling sessions are confidential. The exception would be if you were to pose a danger to yourself or others, in which case the relevant parties would be notified. We understand confidentiality and privacy can be a concern. Any information disclosed to us is treated confidentially (including case notes, records, and psychological test results) and stored accordingly. No information will be disclosed without the client’s consent. If there is a need to disclose information (i.e. to a doctor, solicitor or third party) the client will be consulted and a release of information will need to be signed by the client. There are some legal limitations to confidentiality which will be explained to clients in the first session.
  • What can I expect or know about my first appointment?
It’s very normal to feel anxious, nervous, or unsure about your first session of psychological counselling. Our psychologists will provide a private, comfortable, safe, respectful and non-judgmental place for you to discuss anything you need to. In the first few sessions, the psychologist will typically ask you questions about yourself, your life, and any presenting problems you would like to work on. Together, you will create a plan of how therapy can assist you with these problems, how many sessions it may take, and how frequently you should meet. Prior to your first session it can be helpful for you to ask yourself what changes you would like to make in your life. The aim of therapy is for us to then work together to help you achieve those changes.
  • My child needs a psychologist, can I attend the sessions along?"
In the first session with your child, your psychologist will often invite you both into the session at the beginning, then ask to see the child by themselves. After this, your psychologist will discuss with you the most appropriate structure of future counselling sessions with your child. In the case of adolescents, depending on the age of your teenager they may wish to see their psychologist without their parent present. However, it is recommended that a parent is always available to attend the sessions if needed, and parental consent is needed for under 16s to attend therapy.
  • Can I attend sessions along with my family member?
If you are attending a session in person, a family member, partner, or friend can absolutely come with you to the location and stay in the waiting room while you are with your therapist. But they can’t go into your session with you unless you are attending a couple therapy session or a family therapy session.
  • What happens in a counselling process?
There is no typical counselling session. Your counsellor will be highly trained in listening and reflecting, and provides a safe environment in which to explore your issues. With most types of therapy you are free to discuss what you wish, from everyday events, dilemmas, feelings, and thoughts, to regrets, aspirations, memories and dreams.
